Chania, Greece

6 Days in Chania, Crete

Chania, Greece · 6 days, 5 nights · mid-range · from about $1400 per person · best in May, June, September

Chania is Crete's true capital—a jewel of Venetian harbours and winding old-town alleys where Cretan life outlasts tourism. This trip balances harborside wandering and seafood dinners with gorge hikes, mountain villages, and winery visits, anchored in a town small enough to feel real.

What to expect

Day by day

Day 1: Arrival & Old Harbour Magic

Arrive Chania; check into old town near harbour. Walk the Venetian harbour walls and lighthouse.

Explore the maze-like medina—tiny streets, artisan shops, the covered market (Agoré).

Sunset drinks at a harbour café; dinner at a traditional taverna—grilled fish, Greek salad, ouzo.

Day 2: Samaria or Imbros Gorge

Pre-dawn departure (5:30 am) for Samaria Gorge trek; minibus to Xyloskalo trailhead; 6-hour hike downward.

Finish at Agia Roumeli beach village; swim in turquoise water; return by boat and minibus to Chania.

Relaxed dinner—light meal (saganaki cheese, horta) and early rest.

Day 3: Wine Country & Mountain Villages

Rent a car; drive into Apokoronas hills. Visit a small winery (Vidiano Estate or Manousakis).

Taste wines paired with local cheese and olives. Explore hilltop village Vamos; lunch at a plateia taverna.

Return; aperitivo at a rooftop bar overlooking Chania; dinner at Tamam (fusion Cretan).

Day 4: Beaches & Underwater

Drive west toward Balos; stop at Kaliviani Monastery (active convent); continue to Balos beach.

Swim in shallow, turquoise Balos lagoon; snorkel if energy permits. Picnic lunch on sand.

Return; walk through the old town; stop at a traditional gliko (spoon sweet) café for dessert and Greek coffee.

Day 5: Archaeology & Markets

Visit Chania Archaeological Museum; focus on Minoan pottery and Bronze Age artefacts (2-hour visit).

Stroll the covered market (Agoré); buy honey, dried herbs, loukoum, raki (grape brandy) as gifts.

Sunset walk to Venetian Fortetza fortress; sunset aperitivo overlooking the sea; dinner at a locals-only taverna.

Day 6: Gentle Imbros & Departure

Optional: easy 2-hour hike through Imbros Gorge (limestone canyon); swim in mountain pool at exit.

Return to town; last swim at Marathi Beach or harbour café time.

Depart or stay longer; final taverna dinner in the old town.
