This trip pairs the iconic Inca Trail with less-crowded high-altitude hikes around the Sacred Valley. You'll acclimatise in Cusco, climb through puna grasslands and cloud forest, and reach archaeological sites that predate Spanish conquest—without the four-day guided convoy everyone expects.
Arrive in Cusco (3,400 m); check into hostel in San Blas neighbourhood; rest and hydrate.
Walk the Plaza de Armas; visit Cathedral and nearby Incan stonework foundations.
Light dinner; coca tea to combat altitude. Early bed.
Meet guide at Ollantaytambo; drive to Km 82 trailhead; begin Inca Trail descent into cloud forest.
Hike 6 hours through tropical forest; pass Llactapata ruins and Incan stone steps.
Camp at Wayllabamba (2,650 m); dinner and sleep in provided tent.
Pre-dawn start; climb Dead Woman's Pass (4,200 m) in darkness with headlamp.
Descend through more ruins (Runkuracay, Sayacmarca); reach Sun Gate at dusk.
Sleep inside Machu Picchu sanctuary (exclusive to trekkers); explore ruins at dawn before day-trippers arrive.
Sunrise at Machu Picchu; guided tour of Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana Stone, and agricultural terraces.
Optional hike Machu Picchu Mountain (peak above the ruins); train back to Cusco.
Arrive Cusco evening; rest and massage.
Drive to Moray; hike through pre-Columbian agricultural laboratories (concentric terraces, 2 hours).
Visit Salineras salt ponds (1,000+ connected pools on mountainside); short hike between salt work areas.
Return to Cusco; final dinner and departure or continue to Amazon.
