Day 1: Les Rousses to Chalet de la Forêt

Start on the GR5 trail from Les Rousses village (altitude 1,120m).

Ascend gently through beech forest to Chalet de la Forêt (1,482m); 4 hours, mostly forested.

Dinner of local saucisse and raclette; shared dormitory with 8 beds.

Day 2: Chalet de la Forêt to Refuge de l'Abbaye

Ridge walk via Mont-de-Bujoux; limestone outcrops and panoramic views open up.

Detour to Fromagerie d'Hauts de Chalain (working cheese dairy); taste fresh Comté, return to route.

Reach Refuge de l'Abbaye (1,450m); trout from nearby stream, homemade pie.

Day 3: Refuge de l'Abbaye to Chalet du Lac de Chalain

Walk the dramatic Cirque du Fer à Cheval rock amphitheatre rim; 3.5 hours.

Descend to the turquoise Lac de Chalain; swim or rest.

Lakeside chalet with 4-bed rooms; fish stew and local wine.

Day 4: Chalet du Lac de Chalain to Clairvaux or onward

Easy 2-hour descent to the valley town of Clairvaux-les-Lacs.

Explore the old abbey ruins or catch a bus back to Les Rousses.

Return to Les Rousses for a hot shower and celebratory meal.
