Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Matsumoto

Arrive at Matsumoto Station; explore the feudal Matsumoto Castle and its black-walled keep.

Stroll Nakamachi district's historic merchant houses and sake breweries.

Rest at your ryokan; early night for the mountains ahead.

Day 2: Kamikochi Entry & Myojin Pond

Take the bus from Matsumoto to Kamikochi trailhead (2.5 hours); enter via Kappabashi Bridge.

Hike 5km to Myojin Pond; check in at mountain hut and settle in.

Dinner at the hut; watch alpenglow on Hodaka peaks from the common room.

Day 3: High Alpine Circuit

Early hike to Taisho Pond via the ridge trail for clear views.

Return via Weston's Stone memorial; afternoon bath and rest.

Dinner and mingle with other hikers in the hut communal space.

Day 4: Hodaka Scramble & Exit

Scramble toward Hodaka summit (technical sections); expert guides available.

Descend and hike out via Kappabashi; take evening bus back to Matsumoto.

Recovery meal of ramen and onsen at Matsumoto ryokan.

Day 5: Takayama Old Town & Culture

Train to Takayama (1 hour); visit Takayama Jinya historical government house.

Wander sake breweries (Sake Museum, Yoshijima House) in the old merchant district.

Dinner at a mitsuwa restaurant specializing in hoba miso (leafy grilled vegetables).

Day 6: Kappa Bridge Trail & Mountain Forest

Half-day trek: hike the scenic Kappa Bridge trail through beech and cypress forest.

Visit the Hidatakayama Folk Museum; explore local woodcraft workshops.

Traditional kaiseki dinner and natural hot spring soak.

Day 7: Return & Reflection

Visit Takayama morning market (only open Thu–Sun); browse local produce and crafts.

Train back to Matsumoto; final stroll through castle gardens.

Depart for home or extend via Nagano onsen towns.
