4 Days in Vavau, Tonga: Humpback Whales & Hidden Anchorages
Vava'u's whale season (June–August) is singular: you'll swim alongside mother-and-calf humpback pairs, then anchor overnight in secret lagoons surrounded by uninhabited islands. This is intimate, off-the-grid island life with a wildlife encounter few travellers experience.

Day by day
Arrive at Nuku'alofa International Airport; ferry to Vava'u (90 min) or domestic flight.
Meet your live-aboard boat crew; safety briefing and provisioning in Neiafu port.
Cast off at sunset; anchor in Swallows Cave anchorage; kava ceremony with crew.
Tender boat departs at dawn to locate humpback pods; swim with mothers and calves (guided).
Return to main boat; lunch and rest while boat relocates to new anchorage.
Snorkel the reef wall near Foa Island before dinner and overnight anchorage.
Snorkel Pangaimotu Island's sea caves and coral heads; explore limestone formations by tender.
Visit the royal palace on Pangai if permitted; stop at traditional kava bar on Neiafu waterfront.
Anchor in a remote lagoon; fishing opportunity at dusk; island feast dinner with crew.
Final whale encounter if pods are present; tender to Ha'amonga 'a Maui ancient stone monument on Tongatapu.
Return to Neiafu; depart live-aboard; ferry or flight back to Nuku'alofa.
Depart for onward travel.
