What to expect

Day by day

1: Drive south to Puyuhuapi & Termas del Puyuhuapi

Pick up 4WD rental in Puerto Montt or Coyhaique; drive south on Carretera Austral.

Stop at Villa Santa Lucía for lunch (last decent fuel & food for 200km).

Arrive Puyuhuapi; camp or lodge. Soak in Termas (hot springs) for free near town.

2: Laguna Esmeralda & hanging glacier

Drive to Cerro Castillo trailhead; hike 6 hours round-trip to turquoise glacier lake.

Swim or wade in frigid Laguna Esmeralda (bring a wetsuit or just wade).

Return to Puyuhuapi; camp near the river or stay in a hostel.

3: Ventisquero Colgante & remote hot springs

Drive gravel toward Villa Santa Lucía; turnoff to Ventisquero Colgante viewpoint.

Short walk to viewpoint of hanging glacier; return to base, then explore unmapped hot springs near Río Palena (guide or locals can direct).

Wild camping near a waterfall or return to Puyuhuapi lodge.

4: Return north via scenic detours

Drive back north; stop at Lago Risopatrón for kayaking (rent boats in Puyuhuapi town).

Explore fjord inlets; paddle beneath old-growth forest cliffs.

Drive toward Puerto Montt or fly out from Coyhaique (book in advance).
