Day by day

Hike Cathedral Spires Trail (4 miles) through towering rock formations rising from forest floor.
Drive Needles Highway (Scenic Byway 87) through 13 granite tunnels and narrow mountain passes.
Visit Sylvan Lake; hike Harney Peak if energy permits (8-mile round trip from town); stay in Hill City; dinner at Delmonico Grill.
Drive north to Deadwood (40 miles); explore Main Street's saloons, historic hotels, and gold-rush museums.
Tour the Homestake Mine visitor center or visit the Adams House museum; pan for gold at a local claim.
Stay in Deadwood; dinner at Delmonico or Jesteburg Saloon; try your luck at the historic casinos.
Drive east to Lead to tour the Sanford Lab (underground research facility in former mine); explore the old town.
Continue to Spearfish and hike Spearfish Canyon Trail along a limestone canyon and stream (4 miles one-way).

Drive south to Wind Cave National Park (1 hour); tour the underground passages (1.5-hour guided tour).
Hike the Bison Flats Trail (3 miles) to see roaming bison and prairie dogs on the surface.

Drive scenic US-16A south from Hill City back toward Rapid City; stop at multiple canyon overlooks.
