Day by day
Arrive in San Pedro de Atacama; check into camping (Camping Kunza is reliable).
Rest and acclimate to 2,400 m altitude; drink water, avoid alcohol.
Drive to Salar de Atacama at sunset; white expanse glows pink; 30 min from town.
Early departure (4 am) to El Tatio, 40 km north; geysers most active before sunrise.
Return to San Pedro; explore the village market and Pukara de Quitor pre-Columbian ruins.
Dinner at a local peña with live folk music; rest early for another altitude day.
Drive to Ojos del Salar thermal pools, hot springs in the middle of the salt flat; 1 hour.
Soak in natural hot water; the salt crust around pools is surreal and photogenic.
Return to Camping Kunza and participate in a stargazing session; Atacama has the darkest night sky in the Americas.
Drive south to Laguna Cejar, a salt lagoon where you float effortlessly; 1.5 hours.
Continue to nearby Laguna Tebinquinche; spot Andean and James flamingos, Andean geese.
Camp at a remote spot near the lagoons or return to San Pedro; sunset light on the salt flats is unbeatable.
All-day excursion to Socaire village, 4,200 m; drive via Paso de Jama scenic road.
Explore the remote Andean village; meet locals, visit small church and adobe houses.
Return to San Pedro; bring warm layers and snacks (no services in Socaire).
Drive to Laguna Tuyajito or Ojos del Salar again if you missed it; final photography.
Return to San Pedro, pack up, and depart north toward Bolivia or south to Calama.
Drive to Calama airport (2 hours) or onward destination.
