Utila is the cheapest scuba certification hub in the Caribbean, set on a laid-back island 45 minutes by ferry from Honduras. Snorkel or dive with whale sharks (seasonal), nurse sharks, sea turtles, and vibrant coral gardens, then collapse into a hammock bar on the beach. Perfect for backpackers and first-time divers.

Day by day

Day 1: Arrive & Settle In

Ferry from La Ceiba to Utila (45 mins). Drop bags at beachfront guesthouse in town centre.

Swim at Lagoon Beach, rent snorkel gear, explore the Aquarium (house reef 50 metres away).

Dinner of hudut (fish in banana sauce) at a Main Street comedore, walk dock at dusk.

Day 2: First Dive & Dive School

Enrol in PADI Open Water course or refresher at one of five dive shops; confined-water session.

Second confined session and classroom work on the boat or pier.

Protein-heavy dinner at Andys, meet other divers at The Reef Bar.

Day 3: Open Water Dives & Reef Exploration

Two open-water certification dives on East Point or Little Cay; see nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays.

Snorkel the Aquarium alone or take a kayak tour to mangrove channels and Oyster Bed.

Celebrate certification; ceviche dinner and live reggae or DJ at Driftwood.

Day 4: Relax or Extended Dive

Sleep in; leisurely breakfast and wade in the lagoon.

Optional extra reef dive at Halibut Point or leisure snorkel. Massage or hammock rest.

Sunset on the dock, final meal at a beachside spot, ferry back to La Ceiba.
